More recently it also has been used as a teaching aid but, teachers said, it will be returned soon to its home, the village of Valempoulières, about 50 miles southwest of Morteau. In 2014, teachers said, students spent about 300 hours restoring the clock’s mechanism, which is about 3.5 feet wide and about 4.5 feet tall. And in the middle of the room, on a wooden platform, sits an horloge de clocher, or bell tower clock, the kind of timepiece typically seen in a French village church. I laughed, cried, and cheered as our hero Falcon faced each obstacle. The pace was riveting, the tales were filled with pathos and elation, and the promise of an answer to our countries woes was plausible. The characters were unique emoting memorable voices distinctly their own, while the prose and descriptions brought the story to life. The innocent face of a child on the cover, painted to resemble the American flag, set the tone of this exquisitely told novel, and I was not disappointed as to what lay amongst its pages. Bravo! -Katy Lee, Events Coordinator, and Artist The line, America needed a leader, not another president, exploded with truth, and my imagination ran red, white, and blue. A hope that was believable, when seen through the heart of one child. The story became personal as the hero inspired me to hope for the future of our great country, America. Remaining intrigued as Falcon Sane matured was not a chore, as Late Bird put into print what every true American should be, dedicated and loyal. I was immediately swept up as the story line unfolded the progression of events were engaging, and the characters sprang off the page. But the line, United we can make a difference, sparked something inside me. Politics and reality are not my preferred genre. I found myself wondering what importance lay behind a portrait of a child with the American flag on his face. JC Starr, Retired Educator, and Author The book cover grabbed my attention. What a grand world this could be if we had more Falcon Sanes. But as the book came to a close, I hated to say goodbye to the characters, and mourned the hope momentarily instilled for the future of our country. thrilling and amazing! -Corrin Byrnes, Legal Editor The line, America needed a leader, not another president, exploded with truth, and my imagination ran red, white, and blue. Please use THIS LINK from Interactive Brokers to register for the webinar.SENIOR DEFENSE OFFICIAL (SDO): Good morning, everybody. Blog members are more than welcome to join us tomorrow (April 7) at noon EST to see what today’s platform data tells us about tomorrow’s policy trajectories. Our PolicyScope platform will capture every incremental move as the pandemic peaks and then again when the economy is ready to return to normal.Īn earlier version of this post originally appeared at Traders Insight hosted by our strategic partners at Interactive Brokers in order to promote tomorrow’s webinar with them. The trade and fiscal policy arenas will likely see the most action in the near-term. The next moves will likely be technical and incremental in most areas. Policymakers can continue to relax rules and stay within DEFCON 4 for quite some time. As we noted in this research note for the Mercatus Center last week, the time has come for trade ministers to take comparably broad and bold action to their fiscal, monetary, and financial regulations colleagues. This increases the risk of deep supply chain ruptures that will be far more difficult to address. Extended periods to clear shipments at the dock and at border crosses create non-tariff barriers to imports that exacerbate supply chain tensions. In the current situation, selected decreases in import tariffs by some countries has been offset by the proliferation of export bans from 80+ countries with respect to medical equipment and, last week, some agricultural products. As noted recently, policymaking at the base of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs sometimes requires policy choices that in ordinary times would generate rancor and concerns about trade wars. Despite an elaborate process to promote cross-border cooperation, trade policymakers are more at risk for taking contradictory action during periods of stress. Trade ministers are usually the last to issue “WIT” (whatever it takes) rhetoric. Supply chain disruptions occur not infrequently they are often remedied within a quarter. As noted above, trade ministers have been the last to engage. This leaves trade ministers as the main mechanism for additional economic support. Subsidies can profoundly distort competition and be difficult to unwind later, after the crisis has passed. The broad substitution of sovereign risk for private risk through guaranteed loans is not well understood from a risk perspective across all credit instruments, from loans to small- and medium-sized companies to sovereign debt issuance. However, there may be real limits on how far these fiscal tools can - or should be - used if tax payments remain suspended as well. Fiscal policymakers can expand stimulus and subsidy support structures. The answer is yes, but it is going to be a long haul.Ĭentral banks and financial regulators can make important, incremental moves to expand existing facilities. Some may question whether policymakers have any fire power left to address the pandemic if disruptions and catastrophic loss of life in the advanced economies (which drive global growth) should persist into the summer. Burmese opposition leader and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi stated: "This poem had inspired my father, Aung San, and his contemporaries during the independence struggle, as it also seemed to have inspired freedom fighters in other places at other times.".Nelson Mandela, while incarcerated at Robben Island prison, recited the poem to other prisoners and was empowered by its message of self-mastery.In a speech to the House of Commons on 9 September 1941, Winston Churchill paraphrased the last two lines of the poem, stating "We are still masters of our fate. The established title "Invictus" was added by editor Arthur Quiller-Couch when the poem was included in the Oxford Book of English Verse (1900). The poem was published in 1888 in his first volume of poems, Book of Verses, with no title, but would later be reprinted in 19th-century newspapers under various titles, including: stands for "in memoriam." Īrthur Quiller-Couch, the editor who came up with the title, "Invictus" Title The 1900 edition of Henley's Poems, published after Bruce's death, altered the dedication to "I. Later, the fourth stanza of the poem alludes to a phrase from the King James Bible, which says, at Matthew 7:14, "Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."ĭespite Henley's evocative tellings of perseverance and determination, worry was on his mind in a letter to a close companion, William Ernest Henley later confided, "I am afeard my marching days are over" when asked about the condition of his leg. There is agreement that much of the dark descriptions in the opening lines make reference to Hell. Those who have taken time to analyze "Invictus" have also taken notice of religious themes, or the lack thereof, that exist in this piece. In the second stanza, Henley refers to the strength that helped him through a childhood defined by his struggles with tuberculosis when he says "I have not winced nor cried aloud." In the fourth stanza, Henley alludes to the fact that each individual's destiny is under the jurisdiction of themselves, not at the mercy of the obstacles they face, nor other worldly powers. Įach stanza takes considerable note of William Ernest Henley's perseverance and fearlessness throughout his early life and over twenty months under Lister's care. The poem is most known for its themes of willpower and strength in the face of adversity, much of which is drawn from the horrible fate assigned to many amputees of the day- gangrene and death. With four stanzas and sixteen lines, each containing eight syllables, the poem has a rather uncomplicated structure. Latin for "unconquered", the poem "Invictus" is a deeply descriptive and motivational work filled with vivid imagery. A reading of the poem "Invictus" Analysis I could spend all day planting seeds and cutting down trees, but what would I be without the relationship I build with Pierre, the man who runs the local produce shop? In return, how does this impact my feelings toward Joja Corporation, my former employer, whose megamart on the outskirts of town competes with Pierre's business? While the game is centered around transitioning your farm from abandoned land into a profitable part of the local economy, Stardew Valley seems just as interested in the player’s personal feelings about those elements. Once I navigated around these issues, important details began to emerge. Is slaving away in a cubicle worth it when you can build something that becomes part of the very ecosystem that drives your world? As someone who has worked desk jobs since I was 14, there’s something here that feels uncomfortably accurate, and it pushes you to build something. The premises are similar: Your character works to turn a run-down farm into a functioning institution, learning to raise crops and livestock while connecting with others that live in the community.īut Stardew Valley is more in touch with its message and more grounded in a relatable reality than its inspiration it subverts cliches that tend to drag down similar games. I've heard people call Stardew Valley "that game like Harvest Moon," and that seems like developer ConcernedApe's intent. Stardew Valley is engrossing in a way that many games of its ilk aren’t the most mundane tasks and errands filled me with a sense of accomplishment. When I completed tasks, I was pleased with my sense of purpose as I crossed them off. I needed to remember to go find some clay to build a hay silo the next day, or that it was someone’s birthday. I often found myself filling out manual lists in my notebook. Sometimes you can’t go to the store or sometimes you have to visit someone for their birthday and give them a gift, but every day is a to-do list. Within a couple of in-game days, you’ve built up a routine: Wake up, check the weather, plan your day, water your crops, tend to your animals, say hello to your neighbors, go fishing, hit some rocks, go to bed. Stardew Valley constantly asks: What do you need to get done today? |
